In My Opinion By: Julie Cornejo Published on the net by: Glenn Sosa The new rules that apply specifically to the students are so pathetic. I mean come on, let's be proactive about this. the rules and regulations have been repeated over and over throughout our years at John F. Kennedy High School. The darn rules are aging and losing their ability to knock sense into students. We're students at this school, yet the administration treats us like outsiders. They want us to respect their authority and their rules, but do they listen to us? No, they don't. To them, students don't reach their level. And that is true, we don't, their generation from ours are way different. But they should also understand our generation more, because their generation is almost extinct. And ours has only just begun. So if they want us to respect their choices, they should do the same and respect what we feel. The administrators want all electronic gadgets, such as beepers, cellular phones, cameras, walkmans, and discmans banned from our campus. Yeah, right!! Teachers, staff, and whoever feels they are superior to a student still carry them around. And the administration can not say they are an exeption. If it is to be banned for students, then it should be banned for everyone else too. I don't really understand why the administration feels they should ban students from bringing beepers to school. Some say it is because it is drug related. Is this how the administrators think? Do the administrators think that all students with beepers are drug dealer? They make it seem as though we are always guilty of something. It was bad enough that all electronic gadgets are prohibited from school. Now it seems that everywhere is off limits to students. And most of the off-limit areas were "hang-outs" by most students. Goodness, no wonder students are rebelling against the administration. They make so many rules that students can not even remember any of them. The new off-limit areas seem unreasonable. Now the hallways are so crowded. Everywhere you turn, you run into another student. Did the administrators think about where they are going to shove the next couple of hundred students into? It really is not necessary to close half the school down and turn it into another off-limits area. Students have their hang-out places, a place where they stay and don't feel like they are intruding anyone else's place. That is why having all of the new off-limit areas is so unreasonable. They make the students feel as though they are suffocating, with not much room to walk and avoid a jammed hallway. But wait, there's more. One of the weirdest privileges to be taken from us were the passes to use the bathroom or go to lockers. Don't we all think this is pathetic. Stupid more like it. What if we really need the bathroom? All the teachers say is there's this new rule and the rules say you can't have a pass. So we have to wait until after class. Then if we wait until after class to use the bathroom, we might be late for another class. But in the next class, the teacher is upset about our being late. The teacher will question us like we murdered someon. The teacher may even lecture you about when to go and how to go. See how many problems these rules are? Why can't they just make simple sensible rules? Rules, rules, rules. Too many darn rules that don't make any sense. I swear the administrators have to stop being so close-minded and untrusting. It's the nineties. If they want their rules to be followed, they are going to have to be more open-minded and not have rules that are so harsh. Let's be practical here: you treat us like babies, we'll act like babies. Treat us the way anyone would want to be treated, and you'll be treated the same way.
