New teachers on the block by: Randy Quichocho published on the net by: Matthew H.S. Acda Ten new teachers have joined the John F. Kennedy High School faculty this year; Jesse Blas, Tasha Wyatt, Janiece Sablan, Melanie Torre, Joe Taitano, Joseph Cobb, Michail Clement, Eliceo Macadagum, Lonnie Medford, and Alfredo Santayana. In this issue the Kennedy Chronicle will take a look at five of these new teachers. Jesse Blas, age 38, resides in Dededo and has been married for 20 years. Mr. Blas is a 1978 graduate of JFK. Mr. Blas went through an academy program for construction trades and graph departments. He also completed an apprenticeship program and has been teaching plumbing and carpentry with the Navy for two to three years. Mr. Blas has a certificate in plumbing and carpentry form Central Texas College and a degree in vocational education from GCC and the University of Guam. Ms. Tasha Wyatt, 22, is originally from Denver, Colorado, but grew up in Maui, Hawaii. She now stays in Banyan Heights. Ms. Wyatt came to Guam because she heard a lot great things about the island. She is a graduate of Seattle University. This is the first year she has been teaching. She is also JFK's new cheerleading coach. After teaching a few years at JFK, she plans to work toward her Masters degree in a program called Open System Design.It is about how to design a program to work efficiently. This includes computers as well as school systems. Janiece Sablan is from Agana Heights. This is her first year of teaching English. She is also an advisor for the class of 2000. Mrs. Sablan has a Bachelor's degree with a double major in English and Secondary Education from U.O.G. She is pursuing her Masters degree. She would like to teach math and also become a reading specialist. Melanie Torre, 23, is from the village of Tamuning. She teaches History of Guam and is an NHS advisor. Ms. Torre graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies: Secondary Education. Last semester she taught at Simon Sanchez High School and during the summer she taught at JFK. "I plan to stay at JFK hopefully for a long time," she said. Joe Taitano is from Yigo. He was born and raised here but did all of his schooling off island. He is happily married to Christine Taitano and has two kids. Some of the activities he would like to be involved in are teaching girls and boys basketball, including a year-round involvment in the development of student athletes. Mr. Taitano said he had taught at JFK for thirteen years. After finishing his education, he taught at GCC for about three years. He returned to JFK this year and is now teaching Health. Mr. Taitano received his B.A. and M.A. at Adam State College in Colorado. He also did some post master work at University of Oregon and the University of Colorado, and wnet through an adoptive program at the University of Mexico.
