Donations made to Myelin Project

By Angelica Justiniano Typed by Janice Pestanas

Contributions have been made by JFK students and teachers to the Myelin Project, which aims to find a cure for ALD (Adrenoleukodystrophy) as well as other debilitating diseases. ALD is very rare disease only present in boys that eliminates myelin, afatty layer that surrounds nerves, which is essential for the nervous system to function properly. The contributions were started four years ago by Mrs. Dana Figirlyong, a chemistry teacher, and have been going on ever since. Every year, Figirlyong shows her students the movie Lorenzo's Oil, which shows how the Myelin Project originally started and the devastating effects of ALD. Contributions of money and gifts were accepted at Rm. 227. The gifts were given to Lorenzo Adone, an ALD victim, whose parents' efforts to find a cure eventually led to the formation of the Myelin Project, and who will be celebrating his 19th birthday on May 29.
