Canines Comb Campus for Contraband By Christian Alarcon A drug search using drug detector dogs was conducted by the Guam Police Department, the Department of Customs, and the JFK administration on September 12. Prior the search, the school administration announced theyk would be searching lockers and book bags without any consent from students, it there is possible suspicion of drug possession. The search was conducted in accordance with Board Policy 420, control of dangerous drugs, and with Public Law 10-194, which allows the administration to use any way to stop drugs from entering the school. "What we're doing is a deterrent. We're trying to stop drugs from coming in and before they spread our," explained Mr. Bong Jao, Assistant Principal for Discipline. Students who are caught possessing drugs are subject to suspension and are also referred to the police. The operation stirred up controversy among students. "I have no problem with them [drug dogs] in school as school as long as they serve their purpose and that's to get rid of drugs in campus. And as long as they're making sure that this is a drug-free school, I have no problem with that," said Francis Smith, a senior. "It's just fair, because this is supposed to be a school not some street where you sell drugs," commented Cleofe Carlos, a junior. Cassandra Armour, a junior, belives that the searches invade a student's right to privacy. "I don't think it's fair because people have the right to have their privacy," she says.
